Onychocryptosis, commonly referred to as an "ingrown toenail," is a very common and usually painful pathology of the nail apparatus.
It is characterized by the penetration of the nail (nail plate) into the periungual tissues, usually causing an inflammatory reaction, pain, and functional limitation. For this reason, it is usually associated with debilitating complaints such as pain and difficulty walking, thus impairing quality of life by interfering with work, school, or sports activities.
Treatment of onychocryptosis is in most cases quite effective, allowing for a rapid recovery of the patient; however, due to lack of proper treatment, complications may arise, making treatment more difficult.
